Old Moorhead Plumbing location

The company, now known as Moorhead Plumbing & Heating, was started by plumber and businessman Allen Ora Powell in 1924. Powell ran the A.O. Powell Plumbing business, located at 114 Third Street in Moorhead, until 1949. He sold his interests in the company to Gordon S. Manternach. Maternach changed the name to Moorhead Plumbing & Heating Company. He owned and operated the business until his death in 1964. Maternach’s family took responsibility for the company after his death and eventually sold it to Lawrence ‘Lonny’ Overby, a plumber in their employ, in 1973.

Unknown to city records, the company moved, at some point, to 111 8th Street Moorhead (where KFC is currently located).

In 1978 Overby and his family moved to the newly constructed building along Interstate 94. Overby transitioned the company from large commercial projects and new home/apartment construction to primarily service and repair in the early 1980s. Upon his retirement in 1989, Overby sold the business to Paul Dahlin and Duane Cook. Cook retired in 2003. Paul operated the business through Moorhead and Fargo’s continued growth for over 34 years.

Upon his retirement at the end of 2023, Paul sold the business to his second son, Ryan Dahlin, who has worked for Moorhead Plumbing & Heating for over 20 years and continues to carry on the legacy of it’s predecessors in proudly serving the community.
